Cultivating Family Rhythms of Generosity

Our family ministries team would love to encourage parents to begin the conversation about why and how we give as we cultivate our own family’s rhythms of generosity.

Share “the why” behind your giving

As we shepherd our children, we want to connect truth to the teaching. We want our children not only to know that we give, but also to understand why we give. Our giving is worship, a response to who God is and our thanks for all we have and all we are in Jesus. Giving is a way to show our love to Jesus, who loves us more than we can imagine.

Tell stories of God’s faithfulness and provision to your family

We can use moments at the dinner table or as we drive along the road to share stories of God’s faithfulness to our family, building our children’s own trust in the provision of their Heavenly Father (Psalm 145:4). Our family legacy of generosity can begin with us.

Set a family culture where generosity is normal

As parents, we are constantly sharing our family culture with our kids. Inviting our children into everyday rhythms of giving sets a foundation in their hearts that in your family, generosity is normal and joyful.

Invite your child into practices of generosity

In an era of digital giving, this takes more intentionality. Here are a few ideas as we think about what this might look like in our homes:

  • Invite our children to join us and bring their own giving to Bloom, Passion Kids, or Students. Maybe this looks like some of their savings from chores or babysitting, or maybe they can help give our family’s gift. Jesus wants us to invite our children into the rhythm of joyfully trusting Him with our resources, no matter the size (John 6).
  • Family rhythms of generosity also include everyday hospitality and opportunities to serve. We can bring our children along when we drop off a meal to a new mom, invite them to make a card for someone who needs cheering up, or help an older neighbor with their yard. Maybe we can get ice cream afterwards and celebrate the joy of serving! We can brainstorm as a family and talk about practical ways we can be generous together.
  • We have the most opportunities for practicing generosity in our own home, with our own family. When it’s hard for children to share toys or space or clothes or time, we can remind our children of our family culture and that all we have is a gift from our Heavenly Father.

Pray together that Jesus would show you how to begin this journey of generosity and lean into the story Jesus is writing in and through Passion City Church.

Grateful to partner with your family in the journey of raising your children,

The Passion City Church Family Ministries Team
